Austinist:
At Fun Fun Fun Fest back in Austin this fall, you missed your first time slot and were rescheduled. But the surprise of the rescheduling made it really exciting. The audience had this, “Oh! They did make it after all!” sort of feeling. What was that like from the performer side?

Omar Rodríguez-López: Well, we were on our way to Austin and our van broke down. And so we actually missed our slot, and so we thought we weren’t gonna be able to play, and we went to Austin anyways because, you know, we have friends there. So we went anyways and then the people from the festival said, hey we had a cancellation, there’s a slot and so we said sure of course, so then we just went and we played. And it’s a good example of something that could be seen as a failure: if you have this thing that’s scheduled, and you’re supposed to do your part and show up but then, the van broke down. And so you failed to meet your end of the bargain to show up, and you’re like ‘oh man, we missed that’, and so you missed an opportunity. For somebody else that might be the end of the world, “oh we

If you aren’t familiar with Bosnian Rainbows their story began in 2012 in El Paso, TX. Comprised of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (formally of At The Drive-in and Mars Volta), Deantoni Parks (former drummer of Mars Volta), Nicci Kasper on keyboard and bass, with vocalist Teri Gender Bender, who is also the front-woman of the Guadalajara punk rock outfit Le Butcherettes. I mentioned Teri last, because last is not always least.

The impact of what Teri’s vocals, songwriting ability, and at times– disturbing stage presence, brings to Bosnian Rainbows is immense. Rodriguez has chosen a lineup that has the potential to exceed the heights of his previous projects.

Bosnian Rainbows @ Terminal West in Atlanta on the very first night of their North American tour. Was not sure what to expect, but Teri Gender Bender led us through an amazing set of music. Band to definitely watch out for and catch if they make it to your area.

The Mars Volta have split and At the Drive-In’s reunion came and went, but Omar Rodríguez-López has been hard at work with his new group, Bosnian Rainbows. Their new song “Turtle Neck” shimmers with wavy, lush guitars and unhurried percussion before shifting to sprawling textures and…
